Alastair, Vicar of Henfield, and Rector of Shermanbury & Woodmancote since July 2010, said that he was surprised to have been invited to take up the post, and the timing had been unexpected. In his statement for the Southwark Diocese he said:

I am honoured and delighted to have been asked by the Bishop of Southwark, Christopher Chessun, and the Bishop of Woolwich, Michael Ipgrave, to take up the post of Archdeacon of Lewisham & Greenwich, an area I have lived in before, and have a number of connections with.

Kay & I look forward to working closely with the clergy and people of the Lewisham & Greenwich Archdeaconry, and with the senior staff team of the Southwark Diocese, in what we pray will be an exciting unfolding of the next steps of our shared pilgrimage together with God.

Please hold us, and the people of the benefice of Henfield and Diocese of Chichester who we love and leave behind, in your prayers, as we prepare to come and serve amongst you in the Southwark Diocese. May God richly bless you.

Commenting on leaving Henfield, Alastair said:

This wasn’t a job we were looking for, nor had applied for. Kay & I were actually starting to feel very settled here in Henfield, and would have been very happy to continue here – in many ways we would both have preferred that! We will find it hard to leave….

However, I was asked to go for interview by the Bishop of Southwark, and after much soul searching, we felt that for whatever reason, maybe this was what God was asking of us. And so, after consulting our Bishops in Chichester diocese, we have accepted the Bishop of Southwark’s invitation.

On the Chichester Diocesan website, the Bishop of Horsham, Mark Sowerby, said:

“I am delighted that Alastair Cutting has been appointed as Archdeacon of Lewisham and Greenwich. Though he will be a great loss to the Diocese of Chichester, where he serves as Chairman of the House of Clergy, Alastair has amassed a great deal of experience both as a parish priest and in church governance that will serve him well for this position. I wish him well along with his wife, Kay, as they prepare for the move to South London.”

The new diocesan Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, said:

“It is good news for the diocese of Southwark that Alastair Cutting will be one of the team of new archdeacons. He and Kay are assured of our prayers and very best wishes as they prepare to leave the Diocese of Chichester.”

Alastair’s last Sunday in Henfield will be Easter Day, 31 March 2013, and will be installed at Southwark Cathedral on the afternoon of Sunday 14 April.

Alastair was not the only Southwark appointment announced today, as The Rev’d Canon Jane Steen was also appointed Archdeacon of Southwark. Jane and Alastair will be working closely with Bishop Michael Ipgrave in the Woolwich episcopal area of the Southwark diocese.
