The Bible according to the Little Fishes

This Friday the Little Fishes had another story about praising God. As the Little Fishes were gathering we tried to remember last week’s story about Zechariah and how he praised God for the birth of Baby John. It’s hard when we are all getting terribly excited about Christmas.

One Little Fish decided that the answer to every question was ‘Mary’. Eventually he would have been right except he decided to answer the last question with, ‘I don’t know’. So we sung some praise songs with the Jingle Bells instead.

Then it was time for today’s story. One Brave Little Fish volunteered to dress up as Mary. He looked very sweet although his ‘scared’ face at the arrival of the angel Gabriel would have been enough to frighten the bravest archangel back up to the heavens.

It was time for a change of personnel as another Little Fish took on the lead role as we talked about how Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and sung a song of praise to God.

We talked about our roles in our different play groups nativity plays and discovered that we had the angel Gabriel, a king, a shepherd, a donkey and even a crocodile in our midst.

One of the Little Fishes had turned three since we last saw her so we rounded off our time together by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and eating special cakes. Then it was time to play!

Little Fishes is our ‘mums and tots’ group which meets every Friday in church from 2pm. There is no charge and all babies, toddlers and pre-school children are very welcome to come along with their carers.

Join us next week as we hear about the Christmas angels.

The Bible according to the Little Fishes

Throughout Advent the Little Fishes will be looking at how each of the characters in the Christmas story praised God. We began this week by looking at Zechariah.

The Little Fishes remembered that we had learnt the word ‘Alleluia’ to praise God so we sang some songs and then it was time to get covered in paint as we made our entry for the Nativity Festival next week.

What could a pile of cardboard boxes possibly have to do with the Little Fishes’ story this week?

image

After a song in which we thanked God for cardboard boxes, cups of tea and mums and dads (all things close to the Little Fishes’ hearts), we shared the last in our series of stories about Moses. We heard how Moses told the People of God to make a beautiful tent for their ‘Tent of Meeting’ so of course we had to build one of our own.

Everyone joined in to help construct the tent. Mark 1 was even decorated with purple and gold cloth until one of the Little Fishes stood up and collapsed the roof.

Mark 2 was less beautiful but included a door, some beds and a cunning cubby hole that was just perfect for two Little Fishes to hide in. Then it was time to relax with a custard cream!

Which story will we share next Friday? It will nearly be Advent. It must be time to get the glitter out.

Moses and his shiny face was the subject of this week’s story at Little Fishes.

We thought very hard and remembered the story so far.

We thought very hard and remembered the story so far.

First we used the parachute as Moses’ tent in the desert where he had a chat with God, then we laid it on the floor and pretended to climb to the top of the mountain and huddled in a cleft in the rock and waited while the Lord God passed by. We all then had a go wearing a piece of net curtain to pretend we were Moses with a very shiny face as he reflected God’s glory.

Our craft involved painting AND gluing as paper plates were transformed to look like Moses. There was lots of good listening as we drew his eyes, nose and mouth; painted his face with a ‘little bit’ of gold paint, and stuck on his hair and beard with a ‘little bit’ of glue.

Rev’d Peter was in charge of the biscuits this week. The boys certainly made the most of this.
