The Bible According to the Little Fishes

This afternoon the Little Fishes picked up their story box to discover which story about Jesus they would be sharing but when they shook the box there wasn’t any sound. One Little Fishy suggested it might be a cloud. He might have had inside information because when we opened the box there was a light, fluffy cloud with the message, ‘This is my Son.’

We smoothed out the green grass and counted out the disciples.

When we were sure that we had the right number the story began.

Jesus and his disciples had been teaching in the countryside. Then Jesus told them, ‘I must go to Jerusalem for the Passover. I will be killed, but on the third day I will be alive again.’ The disciples could not believe this. Then he led Peter, James and John to a high mountain to talk with God.

As Jesus was talking with God his face began to shine as bright as the sun and his clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses appeared beside Jesus. Suddenly a cloud covered them.

image

The disciples were terrified. Then a voice said, ‘This is my special son, whom I love. Listen to him. Looking round the disciples saw only Jesus. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ Jesus said. ‘Come follow me.’

The Little Fishes carefully and quietly helped to pack the story away.

Then it was time for some sticking. We each made our own fluffy, white cloud to help us remember the story.

Little Fishes is our ‘mums and tots’ group which meets every Friday (including half term) in church from 2pm. There is no charge and all babies, toddlers and pre-school children are very welcome to come along with their carers for songs, stories, craft and play. Join us next week for another story about Jesus.

The rest of the Little Fishes gathered to a resounding rendition of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’. Then it was time to discover what was inside our very sparkly story box.

image

One Little Fish was insistent there was a fish inside but everyone else said there wasn’t because there wasn’t any water but he was right!

image

A blue fish with the message, ‘You will be fishers of men’, which sounded like a clue for a story…This is the Sea of Galilee.

image

Many different people live by the Sea of Galilee…Some are poor…Some are sick…Some are children…Some are in the fishing business.

image

Jesus said many amazing things and did such wonderful things that people followed him…he came close to the sick…He encouraged the poor…He blessed the children…And he taught the people…’This is the way God wants us to care for each other…this is the way of the kingdom of God.’ But they did not understand, so he said, ‘Come follow Me. I will make you fishers of men.’…Peter and Andrew left their nets to follow Jesus. Then James and John followed too.

image

Then it was time to make our own fishes. One Little Fishy made a whole shoal of fish!

Welcome to the Lord’s Table

image

The story of Jesus and the Children (Matthew 19: 13-15) was the starting point this week for the second session of ‘Welcome to the Lord’s Table’. We gathered in front of the baptistry mosaic to hear the story and to consider the point that our church would not be complete without children.

image

Karen shared the story with us when we moved over to Church House and we wondered how the children would have felt as they drew close to Jesus and he talked to them.

While the older children continued with their work on their Christian journey so far the little ones created a poster of the children of the world gathering to greet Jesus.

Then each of the Little Ones was invited to retell the story to Sarah using our new set of story stones.

In2mission meets next on 9th February but all are welcome to join us every Sunday at 10.30am for Celebrate! Our family friendly service.
